Agriculture in the North is a major sector poised for growth and it will be driven by an increased demand for food, higher heat units to make growing crops more economically viable, lower farm land prices in comparison to southern Ontario, improved transportation routes and niche market opportunities.
Agriculture has been prioritized by the municipality of Timmins as an opportunity to diversify our core industries. Farming was extremely popular in the 1960’s in the municipality, Timmins was a highly populated agricultural zone but we moved away from agriculture as the mining industry grew. Now is that time that Timmins is primed to become a new frontier for family farms to restart.
The agricultural community in Timmins collaborates with other communities in the Northeast District to build a successful food system that is sustainable and growing to its fullest potential.
The location based on weather, lifestyle and the cost of doing business, supports growth unattainable in other areas of Ontario.
Land availability at reasonable costs, plant hardiness zones, and acceptable growing seasons encourage investment attraction.
The history of farming in Timmins and it current food and agriculture portfolio creates a workforce of experience and mentorship. Locally supported by two long standing markets, many more opportunities in the immediate area and a variety of local programs that assist our farmers.
The city also embraces innovative concepts such as Permaculture, Aquaculture and Hydroponics. The collaboration of various partners for agricultural innovation in the north is supported and encouraged by the TEDC.
